Veterinary Care & Tips for Your New Puppy

Congratulations on your new puppy! Welcoming a puppy into your home is a thrilling journey filled with love, joy, and endless cuddles. Whether you're a first-time puppy parent or an experienced dog lover, the team at Wellspring Animal Hospital is here to support you every step of the way.

Your Puppy's First Veterinary Visit

We’re thrilled to welcome your puppy to Wellspring! From their first vaccinations to creating a lifelong wellness plan, we’re here to help them lead a happy, healthy life.

Schedule your puppy’s comprehensive health check-up as soon as possible after bringing them home. During this initial appointment, we will:

  • Conduct a thorough physical examination
  • Discuss and possibly administer the first round of vaccinations
  • Discuss parasite prevention, including fleas, ticks, and heartworms
  • Provide nutritional guidance for proper growth and development
  • Address any questions about behavior, training, and general care

Our Puppy Care Services Include:

Vaccinations: Vaccines are essential for protecting your puppy from serious diseases. We’ll create a vaccination schedule to keep your puppy fully protected as they grow.

Parasite Prevention: We will discuss options for protecting your puppy against fleas, ticks, and heartworms, along with deworming treatments to prevent intestinal parasites.

Spaying and Neutering: Spaying or neutering offers valuable health benefits and supports pet population control. We’ll advise on the best time to schedule this procedure for your puppy.

Nutritional & Growth: We will provide nutritional recommendations on the right diet for your puppy’s age, breed, and size, including feeding schedules and portion sizes to support their development.

Behavior & Training: We are here to help with any behavioral or training questions you may have. We offer guidance on obedience training, socialization, and addressing common puppy behaviors.

Health Education: Our veterinarians will discuss common puppy health topics, including dental care, teething, and signs of illness or injury to watch for.

Future Care Planning: We will establish a personalized wellness plan for your puppy, including a vaccination schedule, parasite prevention, and future vet appointments to support their health journey.

Tips for New Puppy Parents

Here are a few tips to help you navigate puppyhood. Feel free to ask us questions or share concerns during your visit!

  • Establish a Routine: Puppies thrive on routine! Create a consistent schedule for feeding, potty breaks, playtime, and sleep to help them feel secure.
  • Socialization: Early socialization is essential for raising a well-adjusted dog. Introduce your puppy to different people, pets, sounds, and environments to build their confidence.
  • Potty Training: Consistency is key! Take your puppy outside frequently—especially after meals, naps, and playtime—and reward them for pottying outside.
  • Chew Training: Puppies love to chew! Provide plenty of chew toys to encourage them to gnaw on their toys instead of furniture or shoes.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Use treats, praise, and rewards to encourage good behavior.
  • Play Time: Give your puppy daily opportunities to run, play, and explore to support physical and mental well-being.
  • Dental Care: Start brushing their teeth early to prevent dental issues, using dog-friendly toothbrushes and toothpaste.
  • Grooming: Get them accustomed to regular grooming. Brush their coat, check and clean ears, and trim their nails to keep them comfortable and healthy. We also offer nail trims—just ask at your next visit!
